The Project
Energy Security
Shetland and the other Scottish islands benefit from Europe's largest wind (and marine) resource.
The price and availability of fossil fuels remains volatile. Indigenous sources of renewable energy are the best means to avoid increasing dependency on fossil fuels.
The cost of producing electricity from the wind in Shetland, where the wind resource is recognised as among the best in the world, is already competitive with the cost of producing electricity from natural gas and would be better than coal if the cost of pollution were taken into account. The way in which people use and generate electricity is set to change fundamentally - every household, business and region has to consider what contribution it can make to reducing carbon emissions and ensuring energy is affordable to all.
We in Shetland have the opportunity to lead the rest of UK in tackling the challenges of climate change and energy security.
