CONSULTATION over Viking Energy's plans to build a 150 turbine wind farm in Shetland is to be extended into next year.

Viking announced yesterday (Wednesday) that they would be submitting an addendum to the environmental statement originally published on 20 May this year.

The document will respond to concerns raised by statutory and other consultees, as well as the Shetland public, in recent months.

The Scottish government's Energy Consents Unit has agreed that the consents process be extended while the addendum is produced so that further consultation can take place.

Once it is published there will automatically follow a statutory 28 day consultation on the new information contained within the document.

Viking last night (Wednesday) said they anticipated the addendum would be ready for submission "in the turn of the year".

"The new information available and the new responses of consultees resulting from revisions to the Environmental Statement will allow the Council to make a fully informed recommendation to the Scottish Ministers," they said.

Project Co-ordinator Allan Wishart said: "There have been a range of views expressed about the wind farm proposal since the application was submitted and it is important that all these are considered carefully by Viking Energy.

"That consideration and any necessary changes to the application will take some time and this extension of the consents process will allow it to be done properly."
