The Viking Energy Project team is at the British Wind Energy Association Conference in Liverpool today to learn more about new technologies, which could be applied in the Shetland wind farm proposal.
They will also be pressing the industry regulator to look again at transmission charges, which work against the development of wind farms on Shetland.
The team has arranged several meetings with energy agencies, the industry regulator as well as turbine manufacturers and other suppliers. The conference itself, which brings together the top experts in the field of wind energy, as well as politicians, suppliers and regulators, is covering issues such as the contested interconnector transmission charges and the latest technology options. David Thomson said: "We were particularly delighted to hear Shetland's potential to contibute to the UK becoming a low carbon economy mentioned in the opening speeches of the conference."
One of the main topics for discussion at the conference has been the Project Discovery Scenarios Report produced by industry regulator Ofgem. The report highlights that everyone's household energy bills will rise by up to 60% [sixty percent] if the UK does not meet the challenging renewable energy targets set by Government. As David Thomson pointed out: "Shetland has some of the UK's worst levels of fuel poverty. Only the achievement of a major renewable energy contribution to the national energy mix will deliver the lowest and most stable prices, which is in Shetland's best interests, as well as ensuring we make our contribution to those critical carbon emissions reductions."
