Construction compound plans being prepared for summer submission

March 27th 2019

Viking Energy expects to submit planning applications this summer for three temporary construction compounds which differ slightly from the four it has consent for already.

As a first step, pre-application notices have been lodged with Shetland Islands Council to give its planning service at least 12 weeks’ advance notice that detailed applications are on their way for larger compounds near Sandwater, an area south of Voe and between Weisdale and Tresta.

Viking Energy will hold public information events about the compounds in the coming weeks before finalising the detailed planning applications.

The proposed Main Compound would be built near the A970 main road between its junctions at Sandwater and South Nesting. It would be near the foot of an access road into the Nesting section of the wind farm. The compound would provide space for offices, workshops, canteen, storage and parked vehicles.

The West Compound is proposed above the A971 road at Scord of Weisdale where a windfarm access track will climb the hill.

The North Compound is planned for an area to the east of the main A970 road, less than 2 miles south of Voe, where access will be taken to build turbines south of Voe and Laxo.

Viking Energy also awaits the outcome of last year's application to build an access track to Upper Kergord, which requires another temporary compound during the few months of track construction.
