Government commits to Scottish islands strike price

Published on June 27th 2013

Viking Energy reaction to UK government announcement:

Viking Energy head of development Aaron Priest, said: "Today's news of a special islands strike price vindicates the concerted efforts over several years by many to ensure the viability of renewables projects in the Scottish islands and the economic benefits they undoubtedly bring.

"This is excellent news for Viking and for Shetland. We look forward to the next step, which will quantify the exact level of these long-term enhancements for the Scottish islands, and Shetland in particular. We welcome this clear signal that the investment barriers identified by government will be removed."

Viking Energy Shetland chairman Alan Bryce said: "Shetland is one significant step closer to building what we expect will be the best onshore wind farm in the world. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to diversify the local economy and boost income to the Shetland Charitable Trust greatly for decades to come.

"This project has real momentum and we have the expertise to make it a great success. Our partners SSE are involved in 70 wind farms and the Burradale team, who have a small stake in Viking, already run the world's most productive wind farm."

The 103-turbine Viking wind farm in central areas of the Mainland is expected to begin exporting power in late 2018 when it connects into the National Grid.
